Intersection of Energy and Justice: Exploring Spatial, Racial and Socioeconomic Patterns of Residential Heating Affordability,  Consumption and Efficiency in Wayne County, Michigan

Within the Detroit metropolitan area, some residents are crippled by the surmounting utility costs making it an arduous endeavor to adequately regulate temperatures in their homes for a reasonable cost given their income. Disparities in household income and energy affordability have been well studied; however, research on differences in the relationship between race, place and energy is lacking. This research explores these relationships using a US Census block group level estimate of average residential energy consumption and energy efficiency by the space heating end use category to display household disparity patterns of energy affordability, consumption and efficiency.


Lifecycle Costs of Battery Storage Systems in a Smart Grid

A MATLAB model was developed to calculate the lifetime of Electrical Energy Storage (EES) systems and therefore calculate their financial advantages. A power demand timeline for primary frequency control was used to calculate the state of charge timeline of the storage system.  With that timeline the aging of the Storage was predicted.
