Message From The Directors

We launched the Center in 1991 through a three-year competitive grant from the U.S. EPA, and with over 35 Years of Impact, have grown to become a leading sustainability Center at U-M.  There are many “firsts” and “legacies” which the Center can claim, such as coining the term “sustainable systems” in 1997.

35 Years of Impact

The need for global solutions to environmental, social, and economic challenges is greater than ever. The Center for Sustainable Systems (CSS), celebrating its 30th anniversary, is a permanent center within the School for Environment and Sustainability at the University of Michigan. For three decades, the CSS has led interdisciplinary research across the spectrum of global sustainability challenges.
