M-Cubed Diamond: Defining Innovative Sustainable Solutions for Film-Based Packages
The M-Cubed Diamond Program enables donors, companies, and foundations to invest in research projects that align exactly with their interests. Funders set the parameters for each project, interact with the University of Michigan to identify faculty experts to lead the research team, and receive compelling updates about the cube’s work through the MCubed website.

Sponsor Description: P&G’s sustainability vision includes zero consumer and manufacturing waste to landfill.
Film recycling is not mainstream in the United States. The current recycling infrastructure manages paper, metals, and rigid plastics. Today, introducing flexible films to material recovery facilities (MRFs) causes problems. In order to advance film recycling, changes will be required for consumer participation, collection, material separation, and end uses of film materials (by type). This project will aim to answer important questions related to material separation. Researchers will develop life cycle assessment models for evaluating environmental impacts of existing and new material.
