The Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA or Superfund) was passed by Congress in 1980 to control abandoned or uncontrolled hazardous sites. As of February 2021, 438 sites from the Superfund National Priorities list have been remediated, over 1300 sites remain on the list.
