Events

Twice a month in the summer CSS researchers will get together and discuss a journal article relevant to sustainable systems.  In addition to being intellectually stimulating, it will give us a great opportunity to chat and connect with each other. While the paper we discuss may not always be exactly in your research area, our diverse experience and input will lead to a vibrant discussion of the topic.

On August 23 we will discuss a 2009 article from Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment entitled, "Modeling multiple ecosystem services, biodiversity conservation, commodity production, and tradeoffs at landscape scales." It uses spatial modeling of land use/land cover changes to predict the impacts on various ecosystem services in the Willamette Valley, Oregon region, including: hydrological services (water quality and storm peak mitigation), soil conservation, carbon sequestration, biodiversity conservation, and the value of several marketed commodities (agricultural crop products, timber harvest, and rural–residential housing).
