MASTER'S PROJECT: Improving Energy Sustainability for the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians (LTBB) Reservation

 -

The Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians (LTBB) is a federally recognized tribe, with 4,559 Tribal Citizens residing on approximately 336 square miles of land in the northwestern part of Michigan's Lower Peninsula. With the goal to institute a new energy economy that supports tribal self-sufficiency via efficient and profitable use of clean energy, the LTBB Tribal Council passed Resolution #051505-01: Adoption of Kyoto Protocol and Renewable Energy Standards. Resolution #051505-01 entails a goal to meet a 25% renewable energy standard for Tribal government buildings by 2020. Recognizing that the pervasive use of nonrenewable energy sources negatively impacts the development of symbiotic relationships with surrounding ecosystems, our role in the LTBB Sustainability project was to develop a framework which explores renewable energy potential on the reservation, assesses potential energy savings from reducing existing energy consumption, examining tribal policy, and analyzing the economics of both energy efficiency upgrades and potential renewable energy projects.
