U.S. domestic nickel sourcing for EV battery applications

 -

The objective of this project is to determine the feasibility of domestic nickel resources to meet growing demand from EV batteries. We will evaluate the resource adequacy across a range of battery chemistries and EV growth scenarios. We will also examine energy and GHG implications across various domestic sources. Nickel is a key component in nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) batteries, among the most popular EV battery chemistries today. This will establish whether EV supply chain security can be maintained if geopolitical challenges reduce the reliability of imported materials. These findings along with our modeling approach will be described in a manuscript for publication in an academic journal.
